Dracaena sanderiana 'Lucky Bamboo'

Despite the name, Lucky Bamboo isn’t actually bamboo. It’s a Dracaena native to tropical Central and West Africa, where it grows in warm, wet forest habitats. Its slender stems and fresh green leaves give it that clean, almost architectural look that makes it so recognizable. 

It’s also one of those plants that can live surprisingly happily in either soil or water, which is part of why it became such a classic houseplant.

+ Light: Medium to bright filtered light is ideal. It tolerates lower light surprisingly well, but growth will be stronger with more light. Keep it out of strong direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage. 

+ Water: If yours is planted in soil, this is one Dracaena that prefers not to get completely dry. Allow the soil to partially dry, then water thoroughly. If it’s growing directly in water, keep the roots submerged and refresh the water regularly. It can be sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so filtered or chlorine-free water is a good choice if you notice browning leaf tips
