Ludisia discolor ‘Nigrescens’ | Black Jewel Orchid

Ludisia discolor ‘Nigrescens’ is a striking dark form of the Jewel Orchid, grown as much for its foliage as its flowers. Its velvety, nearly black leaves are traced with delicate reddish veins that seem to shimmer when they catch the light. It feels rare and luxurious, but is surprisingly easy to grow.

Unlike most orchids, Jewel Orchids are terrestrial and naturally creep along the shady forest floor of Southeast Asia. Over time, the stems spread outward to form a beautiful little colony. Mature plants can also send up elegant spikes of tiny white flowers, typically during the cooler months.

PLANT CARE

+ Light: Prefers low to medium filtered light. An east or north-facing window is lovely. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch and fade the dark velvety foliage.

+ Water: Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly. It can tolerate getting fairly dry, but prefers to be watered before the soil becomes completely dry all the way through. Avoid keeping the soil soggy.

+ Good to Know: Appreciates humidity and a shallow, well-draining potting mix that still holds a little moisture. One of the more forgiving orchids to grow indoors.
